Burgher’s House opens again for the summer season
The over 200-year-old home museum will open its doors for the summer on Thursday 2 May. The summer programme at the Burgher’s House includes activities such as crafts, lace making, old-time jokes and outdoor concerts featuring a variety of genres. Entry to the museum and all events is free of charge.
Come and enjoy an authentic 19th century atmosphere in the heart of Kruununhaka. The charming Burgher’s House museum will open for the summer season on Thursday 2 May and remain open until 29 September. The museum is open 11:00–17:00 from Wednesday to Sunday and offers plenty of free events for the whole family.
On Saturday afternoons 4 and 18 May at 14:00, visitors can learn about the life of dance artist Martta Bröyer, the last resident of Kristianinkatu 12. On Saturdays 11 and 25 May at 14:00, a workshop will take place in the tiny chamber of the courtyard building, where visitors will have the opportunity to craft traditional rapapalli (braided birch bark rattles) and ship art in the spirit of the 19th century.
An old-time yard party invites visitors on a journey through time to 19th century Helsinki on Saturday 8 June at 12:00–15:00. The programme includes improvised dance, visual arts and old-time dance music. The event will also include a work demonstration on tatting. There will also be a buffet organised by the Martha Organisation selling traditional pastries that will bring the past alive for your taste buds as well.
The series of summer courtyard concerts will start on Saturday 1 June. Come and enjoy live music in the atmospheric courtyard of the wooden house every summer Saturday at 14:00, with music of all kinds. The programme includes sinful folk songs, floating improvisation, nostalgic schlager and Greek, Spanish and Finno-Ugric tunes, to name a few.
On Helsinki Day, 12 June at 12:00–15:00, the chamber of the Burgher’s House will be full of laughter — or not — as the audience will be treated to some truly old jokes from the 19th century. Humour is always a reflection of its time, and some of the jokes may be difficult for modern audiences to grasp, while others deal with universal human experiences and still make us laugh.
